Growth mindset is praising students for their "hard work" not praising them for being "smart". It sends the message that their effort is what led to their success and by focusing on working hard, students do just that the next time around.
Growth mindset also promotes speaking positively about mistakes we've made and how we learn from them. Taking risks and making mistakes is all part of the learning process. You can't be perfect when you try something hard.
